Picture this: the freedom to work from anywhere, the flexibility to shape your own schedule, and the autonomy to pursue your passions. Remote work offers an array of incredible perks, and as someone who has embraced this lifestyle for over three years, I’ve relished in the boundless opportunities it brings. Yet, amidst the sea of advantages, there’s one drawback that echoes in the hearts of remote workers: the longing for human connection.
In my journey as a software engineer, I’ve discovered that while the solitude of working from home has its merits, it can leave you yearning for the energy and camaraderie found in traditional office spaces. Yes, the daily commute may have been tiresome, and the distractions of coworkers may have occasionally tested your focus, but spending every day confined within your home’s four walls can turn even the most resilient minds a little stir-crazy. And as much as I’ve tried local coffee shops to break the monotony, the bustling noise and discomfort can quickly wear thin, especially when Zoom calls demand an environment of tranquility.
Enter co-working spaces—the haven where I found my equilibrium. These spaces offer the best of both worlds: designated areas for collaborative discussions, as well as peaceful corners for uninterrupted concentration. Recently, I embarked on a journey through Sacramento’s vibrant co-working landscape, and now, it’s my pleasure to share my firsthand reviews of these remarkable spaces!
- WeWork
Location: 400 Capitol Mall Ste 900, Sacramento, CA 95814
WeWork sits at the Mall on the 9th floor; however, you may also walk down the stairs to go to the 8th floor as well, which I have done quite a few times as it is a little quieter. For Sacramento standards, there are not many buildings that high up and therefore, not many panoramic views. Above all else, I’d say WeWork trumps the list in this regard.
I can’t remember the exact amount but there were definitely over 10 phone booths sprawled throughout the facility, which was very important to me as I have Zoom meetings. That being said, you are allowed to take calls in a lot of the coworking areas as well. They have a wide range of beverages on tap and coffee available. Something to note is that when you come in the first time, you are given a card that you can use in the future. So if you book a day pass for a certain day, your card will be activated on that day and allow you to navigate up the elevator, etc.
On the day I went, I ended up meeting another remote worker there and we had some water cooler chats. It was a pleasant experience and I definitely will be back.
Off the cuff: For lunch, I went to My Sister’s Cafe nearby – their pesto chicken wrap was really freakin’ good! Afterwards, I walked over to Candy Heaven in Old Sacramento and enjoyed the riverfront.
Best for: Panoramic views of the city
- Outlet Coworking
Location: 2110 K St, Sacramento, CA 95816
In the heart of Midtown Sacramento, Outlet Coworking, founded in 2015 by brothers Travis and Harrison, offers a unique workspace. Upon entering, you’ll find the reception on the right, a couple phone booths on the left, and an open coworking area in the middle. An outdoor patio provides a refreshing space for calls or relaxation.
Venturing through the hallway reveals a variety of private offices with desk space. Towards the back, there’s more open coworking space where calls are allowed, fostering a collaborative environment. During my time there, I encountered professionals and students working together, along with additional outdoor patio space.
Outlet Coworking stands out for its amenities, including complimentary coffee from Camellia Coffee Roasters, various teas, and beer. The outdoor patio spaces became a favorite spot for breaks, phone calls, and lunch.
What sets this coworking spot apart is its part-time membership option, offering flexibility with 5 days a month. This feature, absent in WeWork, appealed to me as it allowed for a weekly escape from home.
Best for: Affordability
- Spaces at Ice Blocks
Location: 1610 R St #3rd, Sacramento, CA 95811
Situated at the trendy Ice Blocks on R Street, Spaces is strategically positioned on the border between Downtown and Midtown. Over the past decade, R Street has experienced significant growth, marked by mixed-use developments that enhance the area’s appeal.
Upon entering Spaces, a visit to the 3rd floor via the elevator reveals a welcoming reception staff. With a flair comparable to WeWork, R Spaces impresses with captivating city views, though not as elevated. The interior design adds to the charm, creating a visually stunning environment. Like other coworking spaces, complimentary coffee is readily available.
During my time at Spaces, I noticed individuals emerging from private offices, while the open coworking areas had fewer occupants, with just one other person at the time. However, I did encounter a challenge in finding particularly comfortable seats—though this was based on my personal experience.
Best for: Location
- Bloom Workspaces
Location: 2014 Capitol Ave, Sacramento, CA 95811
Located on Capitol Avenue in Midtown, near Alaro Craft Brewery and Waterboy, Bloom Workspaces offers a traditional office atmosphere. Upon entering, the carpets, overhead lighting, and segmented layout evoke a familiar office ambiance.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet Brandon, the founder of this coworking space. His outgoing nature extended to introducing me to fellow coworking members. Despite its slightly smaller size compared to other spaces, Bloom Workspaces stood out for the close-knit community where most members knew each other by name.
The name “Bloom” is aptly chosen, given the numerous real plants in the office that contribute to a vibrant and lively environment, requiring regular watering. This botanical touch adds a pleasant element to the office setting. Additionally, Bloom Workspaces offers a 5-days-a-month membership option, similar to Outlet, providing a flexible and appealing choice.
Best for: Water Cooler Chats
- CENTRL Office Downtown Sacramento
Location: 1201 J St STE 200, Sacramento, CA 95814
True to its name, CENTRL Office Downtown is located in downtown on J Street, spanning the second and third floors, complemented by a coffee shop on the ground level. The abundance of coworking space distinguishes this establishment. The layout features offices along the peripheries with picturesque window views, and a central area dedicated to coworking. The two floors offer ample space for various work activities.
During my time at CENTRL Office Downtown, I encountered diverse groups collaborating and observed several business meetings taking place. The well-designed layout, comfortable chairs, and tables contributed to a conducive work environment, allowing for sustained focus. Much like Spaces, I noticed a preference for private offices over open coworking spaces.
Notably, CENTRL Office Downtown offers Flex and Flex Plus memberships, providing options for 4 days a month or unlimited access, respectively. This flexibility adds a thoughtful touch to their offerings. The elegant furniture and well-executed interior design contribute to an overall appealing workspace.
Best for: Focused work
